September 13, 2021Yes, you read that right – we’re talking about winter safety tips for your propane system. You may not be ready for cold weather and snow yet, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start preparing. It won’t be long before you’re having to turn your heat on for the first time, so let’s make sure your propane system is ready!
Safety and Preparedness Tips
Propane systems are a safe and effective way to keep your home and family warm all winter long. That being said, it’s important to do some preparation before the season starts to ensure your system and appliances work reliably when you need them to.
1. Have your propane tank filled before cold weather arrives.
It’s always important to keep an eye on your propane levels, especially when you’re expecting cold weather. Now is a great time to get your tank refilled to ensure you will be prepared for that first bout of cold weather.
2. Prepare your appliances.
Some of your appliances may not have been used for a while, therefore have collected dust. Before you put these appliances to use this winter, clean them and inspect them to make sure they are functioning properly. You should also replace your furnace filter, as this should be done at least once every 9-12 months, if not sooner due to filter size.
3. Maintain a clear path to your propane tank.
This goes for right now, and when it starts to snow. Before the elements get too harsh, make sure your tank is still easily accessible and not blocked by plants, structures, or any other equipment. Now is a good time to clear away any brush or items that make it difficult to access your tank (especially if there were to be snow piled on top).
During the winter months, it’s imperative that your tank remains easily accessible. This means making sure that you clear enough space in your driveway for a delivery truck, and shovel a path to the tank through snow and ice.
4. Keep outdoor vents, chimneys, and flues clear of snow, ice, and debris.
Before the snow and ice are an issue, check your ventilation system for any other debris. Now is a great time to clear everything up so that when winter weather comes, you just have to worry about keeping snow and ice from blocking it.
5. Never use outdoor appliances indoors.
Keep grills, generators, patio heaters, and other appliances that you may use outdoors. These appliances need to be well ventilated and used in open air as they emit carbon monoxide, an odorless gas that can cause sickness and death.
