Celebrating Co-Op Month: The Legacy of Premier Companies
October 28, 2024At Premier Companies, Jeff Jarrett plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of their fertilizer business. From managing logistics to monitoring global market trends, his day-to-day life is ever-changing. But beyond his work in agronomy, Jeff has also taken on the role of co-host for our High Ground podcast, where he connects listeners to the heart of the agricultural industry. In this interview, Jeff shares insights into his responsibilities at Premier, the impact of the High Ground podcast, and how both his work and the show are helping to bridge the gap between farmers and the broader ag community.
Premier: Can you describe your role at Premier and what your day-to-day looks like?
Jeff: I work mainly with the fertilizer side of the agronomy business, purchasing products and working with our river terminals. I help set pricing and at the same time keep up with what is happening in the fertilizer markets both domestically and globally.
Everyday is different; one minute I could be busy with a logistical issue that impacts our current fertilizer season and the next I could be buying barges that won’t arrive until the next season.
Premier: What has been the most memorable or impactful story you’ve covered on High Ground and how do you see the podcast helping to bridge the gap between farmers and the larger agricultural community?
Jeff: I’ve liked all of the stories shared by our guests so far. It seems that you can always learn something new from them, and I think that is a testament to the passion that they each have for their jobs.
I hope we at the podcast encourage people to learn about a new aspect of agriculture that they didn’t know or maybe better yet, they have their minds opened because they heard the other side of a story.
Premier: What are some key challenges you’ve faced in your role at Premier and how did you overcome them?
Jeff: Fortunately, I can say that I have not faced many big challenges at Premier and I attribute that to a strong company with many resourceful talented team members that are very good at what they do.
If I had to list something, I would probably say that finding labor is a challenge for us as well as the ag industry as a whole. We are constantly looking for creative ways to solve this problem and are using things like partnering with Ivy Tech, attending career fairs at high schools and universities, and looking at new technologies like robotic sprayers. It’s a big challenge, but I believe we as a company, and an industry, are prepared to meet it.
Premier: How do you stay up-to-date with industry trends, and how does that knowledge influence the direction of your roles at Premier and the High Ground podcast?
Jeff: Through interaction with the diverse team we have here at Premier Ag and by attending industry meetings and conferences. My years in the industry have allowed me to build a network of people that have helped shape and influence my career. This is the same network that I rely on for help solving problems or calling on to share their knowledge through a podcast episode.
Premier: What do you hope listeners take away from each episode of High Ground?
Jeff: I hope they learn something about the agricultural industry that we love and I hope that they catch a glimpse of the passion that we have for the industry and the American farmer.
