Propane Safety: Spring Yard Work
March 2, 2022
EP 19: Company Merger, Annual Report, & Columbus Grain Elevator
March 7, 2022With warmer weather on the horizon, many are getting in the mood to do a little spring cleaning. If you’re not sure where to start, we recommend spending some time on your propane system and the appliances that have either been in heavy use the past few months, or are about to come out of hibernation.
Clean and Inspect Your Propane Tank
Your propane tank has been through a lot the past season, and it’s important to ensure it is in good working order after the winter months. This is a great time to do any necessary maintenance to your tank and propane system, and make sure it is ready for future use.
One of the most important steps for maintaining your propane system is to make sure the area around the tank is free of any tree limbs, dry grass, or other combustible debris. This will allow easy access to the tank for the propane delivery and maintenance technicians. We also recommend checking for any bird’s nests, or other pests, around your tank and under its lid. Continue to do this regularly to avoid any hazardous situations in the future.
Clean and Test Your Propane Appliances
The health of your propane system doesn’t stop at the tank. Your heaters and fireplaces have been on overdrive the past few months, so it’s time to give them the attention they need. And though it may be time to turn off some of those appliances, others such as your grill and fire pit need to be prepped for their time to shine. Keeping your appliances clean, whether you’re turning them off for a while or getting them ready for the season, will allow them to function properly for a longer period of time
Propane Furnace
Now that you’re finally able to turn down your heat, it’s the perfect time to have your heating system in your home cleaned, inspected, and to schedule any necessary repairs. Performing regular maintenance on your furnace will ensure optimal functionality for years to come, and you will know it’s ready to go once cold weather rolls back around.
Propane Fireplace
Similar to your furnace, you probably won’t be needing your fireplace for the next few months. But to be sure it’s ready to go when you do need it again, you should clean any buildup around the pilot and on the glass or internal surfaces of the fireplace.
Propane Water Heater
Another appliance in your home that requires regular maintenance is your water heater. Over time, propane water heaters acquire a buildup of sediment that can take a toll on the effectiveness of the heater.Tankless water heaters should be flushed out at least once a year to keep it functioning properly. If not flushed and cleaned, this buildup of sediment can be harmful to your water heater and it will need to be replaced sooner.
Propane Oven
Ovens get plenty of use year round, so it’s important to take a minute to make sure it’s getting a regular cleaning – that’s why it’s on our spring cleaning list! Make sure you are thoroughly cleaning the stovetop and burners, as well as the inside of the oven and any of its other features, to remove any buildup that’s still leftover from the holidays.
Propane Grill
It’s finally that time to bring out the grill! You should clean your grill as often as, if not more than, you clean your oven, as grills are one of the main contributors to house fires. Making sure any leftover food or grease buildup is cleaned off before use will not only ensure safety, but help extend the lifespan of your grill. When cleaning your propane grill for the first time of the season, it is also recommended that you inspect the gas lines to make sure there was no damage done through the winter months.
Patio Appliances
Evenings on the patio are closer than you think, so dust off those gas appliances and get ready! Whether it’s a gas fire pit, heater, or patio lighting, these appliances have probably been in storage for a few months, so give them a good cleaning and make sure they are working properly before inviting your guests over.
Let Premier Help With Your Spring Cleaning Checklist
Some of the appliances you will be using in the coming months may have remained unused all winter, or they may even be new. If this is the case, request a safety inspection performed by the technicians at Premier to ensure your propane system is functioning properly. This would also be a great time to order a refill for your propane tank as you may have depleted your supply throughout the winter months.
